While many people choose to communicate with family, friends and colleagues via text message, just over one quarter (26 percent) of Giftbeat’s reporting stores use texting services to reach customers.

“When customers fill out our loyalty card information, they can choose how they want to be contacted. Very few pick text,”

shares a South Dakota retailer.

TEXTING PROGRAMS

Among the store owners who do text customers, the programs used include:

  • Constant Contact (constantcontact.com)

  • Fivestars (fivestars.com)

  • Hit ‘Em Up (hitemupapp.com)

  • Lightspeed* (lightspeedhq.com)

  • Postscript (postscript.io)

  • Shopify (shopify.com)

  • SlickText (slicktext.com)

*Also, a POS system.

ONE-ON-ONE COMMUNICATION

While specific programs work well for retailers who have the cell numbers of multiple clients, other store owners report that they text just a handful of customers and do so using their personal cell phone.

“I don’t group text,” says a North Carolina retailer. “I just text individuals on an as-needed basis.”
